London: A new report has raised serious concerns about the state of democracy around the world, as democratic performance is declining in more and more countries.

A new report has said that, according to global trends, democracy weakened further around the world last year.

The report “The Global State of Democracy 2025”, published by the Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), analyzed the democratic performance of 173 countries in 2024.

According to the report, 94 countries, i.e. a little more than half, showed a decline in at least one key democracy indicator between 2019 and 2024. In contrast, only a third of countries improved.

“The current state of democracy in the world is alarming,” said IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casaszamora.

The report found that the biggest declines since 2019 were in areas related to the holding of fair elections, access to justice and an active parliament.

The largest decline worldwide, at 33 percent, was in Africa, followed by Europe at 25 percent.

West Asia was ranked lowest in terms of democratic performance.
