Dubai: Police have exposed an organized network of professional beggars during an undercover operation.
As a result of the operation, 41 people were arrested from a hotel, who had entered the country on tourist visas but were involved in illegal activities such as begging. A huge amount of 60,000 dirhams, which is about 4.6 million rupees in Pakistani currency, was also recovered from their possession.
All this was part of an undercover operation called “Al-Misbah”, which was organized and carried out very effectively by the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department of the General Department of Criminal Investigation. The police received information about the activities of this group through the 901 helpline, which informed them that some people were begging people in different areas of Dubai under the guise of selling prayer beads and religious items.
Upon receiving the information, the police started an immediate surveillance process, and soon three Arab residents were arrested on the spot. Initial investigation revealed that they were part of an organized begging group. On their identification, the police expanded the scope of the operation and arrested the rest of their associates from a hotel, where all these people were staying.
Police officials say that all these people had come to the UAE on visit visas from Arab countries and had kept their accommodation in a hotel so as not to look suspicious, while in practice they were busy going out to different places in the city and playing with the emotions of people and collecting money.
