More than 216 prisoners escape by breaking ‘earthquake-weakened wall’

Karachi: 216 prisoners escaped from District Jail Malir last night, which is being described as a major failure of the country’s prison security system.
During the escape, clashes also took place between prisoners and police personnel, as a result of which five FC and police personnel were injured. In addition, one prisoner was killed and three were injured.
According to IG Prisons Ali Hassan Zardari, ‘216 prisoners have escaped, 78 have been arrested so far and the search for 138 is underway. Blockades, search operations and intelligence surveillance are underway across the city to arrest other prisoners.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prisons Hassan Sehto told the media that there are currently about six thousand prisoners in the jail. ‘After the earthquake, the prisoners panicked and not only broke the wall but also tried to break the locks.’

Karachi has been hit by 11 earthquakes in the last 48 hours. After the earthquakes, the prisoners were moved out of the barracks as a precaution, taking advantage of which the prisoners broke the wall by pushing it and managed to escape.
