London: British police have stopped Palestine Action from protesting outside Parliament on Monday, in an unusual move.
According to Reuters, the ban comes after two members of the group entered a military base last week, and the government is considering banning the organization.
In response, the group announced that it had changed the location of Monday’s protest to Trafalgar Square, which is outside the police-restricted area.
The pro-Palestinian organization is among the groups that have been continuously targeting Israeli-affiliated defense companies and other institutions in Britain since the start of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
British media have reported that the government is considering banning Palestine Action as a terrorist organization, which would put it on par with organizations such as Al-Qaeda or ISIS.
London’s Metropolitan Police announced on Sunday night that it would ban the Palestine Action protest outside Parliament.
Met Police Commissioner Mark Rowley said: “The right to protest is fundamental and we will always defend it, but the actions taken in support of such a group have generally gone beyond legitimate protest.”
He added: “We have presented the government with operational grounds to ban the group.”
According to Rowley, members of Palestine Action are accused of committing criminal activity worth millions of pounds, attacking a police officer with a hammer, and damaging two military aircraft in last week’s incident.
