London: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope at the Pakistani High Commission in London for “encouraging” outcomes of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Muslim leaders in Washington earlier this week, where the US head of state presented his plan to end Israel’s attack on Gaza.
Addressing overseas Pakistanis at the High Commission in London, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, “We fully participated in the meeting on Gaza, and Insha Allah, its encouraging outcomes will come soon.”
He also expressed concern over the situation in Gaza, which has been the target of Israeli aggression since October 2023, and prayed that there May the ongoing atrocities and barbarity end soon.
Trump’s meeting with Muslim leaders on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York was attended by the leaders of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and Indonesia.
Before the formal consultations, Trump told his guests: “We have to bring back the hostages… This is the group that can do it, more than any other group in the world… So it’s an honor to be with you.”
Trump also stressed the urgent need to end the conflict: “We’ve had 32 meetings here, this one is very important because we’re going to end something that probably should never have started.”
According to reports by Israel’s Channel 12 and US-based Axios, President Trump’s plan envisions an immediate ceasefire and the release of both living and dead hostages. A phased withdrawal of Israel from Gaza governance, excluding Hamas but including the Palestinian Authority; securing Gaza and deployment of Arab and Muslim peacekeepers to facilitate Israel’s withdrawal; and internationally supported reconstruction and relocation programs financed by regional donors.
These details were reportedly shared with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, although Israel did not draft the plan.
Dar, who also attended the meeting with Trump, also expressed hope for positive outcomes of the meeting, saying that once the outcomes are out, “we will share them with the nation.”
He also said that follow-up communications after the meeting continued till last night.
Earlier in the conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz also referred to his engagements in New York, where he led the Pakistani delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He said that his speech at the UNGA reflected the sentiments of Pakistanis, and he fought for the cause of Indian-occupied Kashmir there.
The Prime Minister had his two meetings with Trump in Washington during his recent US visit. Also touched upon the bilateral meeting, saying it was a “productive” and “constructive” engagement.
“It was held in a conducive atmosphere,” he said, adding that he hoped it would help further strengthen Pakistan-US relations.
