London: Army Chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had offered America to build and operate a port in Pasni during their meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. The British newspaper Financial Times has claimed that Pakistan has contacted US officials and offered to build and operate a deep-sea port in the coastal town of Pasni in Balochistan.

The report claimed that a proposal has been made to allow American investors to build and operate a terminal in Pasni so that they can access Pakistan’s valuable mineral resources.

The offer came after Army Chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met US President Donald Trump at the White House last month. During the meeting, the Prime Minister invited US companies to invest in Pakistan’s agriculture, technology, energy and mineral sectors.

According to the Financial Times, the proposal was presented to some US officials and the Army Chief was also briefed on the project before meeting President Trump. The plan makes it clear that the port will not be used for any US military base, but rather, it aims to attract development investment.

Pasni is a coastal city in Gwadar district, which is located near the Afghanistan and Iran borders. A deep-sea port has already been established in Gwadar with the cooperation of China.

According to the newspaper, the plan also includes a proposal to lay a rail network, which will connect the port with Pakistan’s mineral-rich western provinces.
