Lahore/Mureed K/Islamabad: Clashes have been ongoing between police and TLP protesters in Lahore since Friday. To disperse them, the police used tear gas and baton charges, while the protesters pelted stones.
On Saturday, clashes broke out between party workers and police in Kalashah Kaku and Mureed, with police firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets to prevent protesters from breaking the barricades.
Lahore Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Kamran Faisal told a press conference today that the protesters were violent.
“They seized government vehicles, damaged several and completely burnt a police vehicle,” he added.
He added that more than 100 people have been arrested. However, the TLP claims that the police have detained 700 of its workers.
TLP spokesperson Ali Awan claimed that 25 of its workers have been killed so far, while more than 200 workers are injured, of whom 50 are in critical condition.
According to the spokesperson, the injured are also being provided medical assistance by the march participants.
He said that the police have also entered the house of party chief Saad Rizvi and taken his family members into custody.
Ali Awan said that the march will leave for Islamabad on Sunday morning after staying beyond Mureed tonight.
The provincial government has dug trenches near Gujrat, Kharian, Sarai Alamgir and Jhelum Bridge to prevent the march from reaching Islamabad.
The motorway and GT Road coming from Lahore to Islamabad are closed, due to which citizens are facing severe difficulties in transportation.
According to the Motorway Police, the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway, Multan-Lahore Motorway, Multan-Islamabad Motorway, Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway, and similarly the Lahore-Islamabad GT Road are also closed for traffic.
Security is also on high alert in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and containers have been placed on the internal and external routes of Islamabad, including Faizabad, blocking the roads, due to which citizens are facing transportation difficulties.
TLP chief Saad Rizvi had called for a ‘Labaik Ya Aqsa’ march from Lahore to Islamabad on Friday (October 10) against the Israeli attacks on Gaza, but on the night of October 8, the police and administration surrounded the TLP headquarters, Masjid Rehmatul-l-Alameen, placed containers and arrested several activists.
