Vatican: Britain’s King Charles and Pope Leo prayed together in the Vatican’s historic Sistine Chapel, the first joint worship by a British monarch and pope since England’s separation from the Pope in 1534.
The service was held in Latin and English in the Holy Chapel, where the two leaders prayed for peace and unity under Michelangelo’s famous painting “The Last Judgment”. The event was attended by Pope Leo, Anglican Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, the Sistine Chapel Choir and singers from the two royal churches.
The historic moment came when King Charles and Queen Camilla are on an official visit to the Vatican, which is being seen as a sign of improved relations between the Catholic Church and the Church of England.
According to the Reverend James Hockey, a theologian at Westminster Abbey, “This moment is like the healing of the wounds of history. Only a generation ago, this would have been impossible, but in the past 60 years, the dialogue between the two churches has advanced significantly.”
During the service, Pope Leo also bestowed the honorary title of “Royal Confrater” on King Charles, and a special seat was set aside for him in St. Paul’s Church in Rome that will be reserved only for British monarchs in the future.
According to Bishop Anthony Ball, the representative of the Church of England, “this honour shows that both churches are seriously working towards a common future.”
