New York: Voting for the mayoral election has begun, with South Asian politician Zahran Mamdani leading the way and close to becoming New York’s first Muslim mayor in history.
Early voting for the New York City mayoral election began on Saturday, with 34-year-old South Asian state legislator and self-proclaimed democratic socialist Zahran Mamdani surprisingly leading.
Once considered an outsider in the political arena, Zahran Mamdani’s campaign has gained popularity thanks to young progressive volunteers and public discontent against rising inflation.
His promise to halt rent increases for two million New Yorkers is resonating in a city where affordable housing is increasingly a dream.
If elected, Zahran Mamdani would be New York’s first Muslim mayor, a historic milestone.
However, observers say his popularity is linked to his progressive and socialist views, not his religion.
Zahran Mamdani is a supporter of labor unions, a wealth tax, public transportation, and green housing. He advocates for social cohesion, protection of the rights of undocumented immigrants, LGBTQ rights, and equal access to health and education.
His positions have gained him wide popularity among young and diverse voters, including African-American and Hispanic communities.
