Dawn Exclusive: Government resources wasted; Inefficient rulers, useless policies, recommendation culture, bad manners, and lack of government jobs have led to nurses going abroad, a potential shortage in Pakistan

The government is spending Rs. 165 million annually on monthly honorariums for students, according to the report

Daily Dawn, Dawn TV Investigation Cell

Karachi: The majority of nurses (male and female) who complete five years of education and training on a monthly honorarium from government and private nursing colleges and schools established in government hospitals in Sindh are unable to get government jobs, due to which trained nurses are heading abroad for jobs.

Every year, about 1,500 nurses graduate from government and private nursing colleges and schools in Sindh after completing 4 years of education and one year of housework, out of which 400 to 500 nurses get jobs in government hospitals.

According to the research report, the government is spending Rs. 165 million annually on monthly honorarium for students studying in government and private nursing educational institutions established in government hospitals of Sindh, and this honorarium reaches about Rs. 820 million over a period of five years. There are only five thousand vacancies for nurses in the government hospitals of Sindh.

Every year, the majority of the nurses who graduate do not get jobs in health centers of Sindh province, due to which most of them go to foreign countries for jobs and attractive benefits. Thus, Sindh province and Pakistan are deprived of the services of these educated nurses, on whom huge amounts of money are spent from the government treasury. The Sindh government should increase the number of nurse vacancies in Sindh government hospitals and health centers in terms of the number of beds, so that patients can be cared for better.

According to the research, the number of patients in government hospitals in the province is increasing day by day, compared to which the number of nurses is significantly less. In the general ward of government hospitals, a nurse has to take care of 12 to 15 patients, while a nurse working in the ICU has to see more than six patients.

According to the research report, there is currently a shortage of 15,000 nurses in government hospitals. It should be noted that there is no nursing university in Sindh, while the Sindh government has started an evening nursing course for the first time in government nursing schools to address the shortage of nurses in the province. Currently, there are 21 nursing schools in various government hospitals in the province, while more than 80 private nursing schools are established. Every year, 70 to 80 students are admitted in government nursing schools, while 50 are admitted in a private nursing school.

Students who take admission in government and private nursing schools are given a monthly honorarium of Rs. 30,000 by the Health Department of the Government of Sindh. Currently, more than 1,500 nurses are passing out from government nursing schools annually, while 4,000 nurses are passing out from 80 private nursing schools annually. Thus, 5,500 nurses are being trained annually in the province, who are being given a monthly honorarium of Rs. 30,000 per nurse by the health department.

Thus, the health department is spending Rs. 160 million annually on the education and training of nurses. Thus, during the four-year nursing degree and one-year house job, the Sindh government is spending Rs. 820 million on nurses, but due to the government’s poor strategy, due to the lack of government-level jobs, these nurses go abroad for jobs, which causes the government to lose crores of rupees annually.

It should be noted that the number of nurse vacancies with the health department is only 5,000, while 5,500 nurses are being trained annually.
