London: People born after 2008 will be banned from smoking for life in the UK
The UK has banned the purchase of cigarettes by every child born after December 31, 2008, as part of its campaign for a smoke-free generation.
This ban is being imposed under the “Tobacco and Vapes Bill,” which has been passed by both houses of parliament and will soon come into force after the assent of King Charles.
Under this new law, it will be illegal for people aged 17 or below to buy cigarettes in the future. Shops will not be allowed to sell tobacco to these people.
Similarly, vaping with children in cars, outside playgrounds, schools, and hospitals will be prohibited.
However, under this law, vaping will remain permitted in homes and open private places.
UK Health Secretary Wes Strating described it as a historic step, saying that prevention is better than cure. This law will save lives and reduce pressure on the health system.
The Ministry of Health statement also claimed that smoking is a major cause of preventable death, disease and disability in the UK, which is why this law is being considered a major step for public health.
