Liverpool: A man drove a car into people celebrating a football match in the British city of Liverpool, injuring 45 people.
The incident occurred on Monday when people had gathered to celebrate the Premier League championship.
According to the report, the man who drove the car has been arrested, aged 53 and from the UK.
Police say that this was an individual act and there is no possibility of anyone being involved and the matter is not being investigated as a terrorist act.
Ambulance service chief Dave Kitchen said that 27 injured people have been taken to hospital, two of whom are in critical condition, while the remaining 20 had minor injuries, and were given medical treatment at the scene.
He said that at least four children were among the injured.
Four people and a child were trapped directly under the vehicle and firefighters pulled the vehicle out.
“It turned a happy day for the city into a dark night of sadness,” City Council leader Liam Robinson said at a news conference late at night.
An eyewitness said that as people started to leave after the function ended, a grey van turned towards them and started mowing them down.
A video shared on social media shows the vehicle first hitting a person outside the rush hour, sending them flying into the air, and then plowing into the crowd.
Harry Rashid, who was at the scene with his wife and two daughters, said, “It was very fast and passed us and people kept beating the driver on the curb and telling him to stop.”
According to him, “The crowd got angry when the vehicle did not stop and broke its windows and the vehicle slowed down a little but then sped away. It was a very scary scene, it seemed to be done deliberately.”
