ICC imposes a heavy fine on Mohammad Siraj, demerit points

Indian fast bowler violates code of conduct for the second time in 24 months

Sports reporter, Daily Dawn, Dawn TV report

London: The ICC has imposed a heavy fine on Indian fast bowler Mohammad Siraj for violating the rules and has also imposed a demerit point.

While celebrating after taking the wicket of English batsman Ben Duckett on the fourth day of the Lord’s Test, Mohammad Siraj lost his temper and not only went near Ben Duckett and shouted insults but also bumped his shoulder with the English batsman.

For this act of Siraj, the ICC has imposed a fine of 15 percent of the match fee on the Indian fast bowler for violating the code of conduct. Along with this, a demerit point has also been added to his disciplinary record.

According to the ICC, Mohammad Siraj has breached Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct, which deals with conduct by players and support staff that is considered offensive.

This is the second time that Siraj has breached a rule within 24 months, after which his number of demerit points has increased to two. If a player receives four or more demerit points in a 24-month period, he is punished in the form of suspension.

Former England captain Alastair Cook also reacted strongly to the incident, saying that celebrating in someone’s face is unacceptable. Even if Duckett himself took a deliberate step, Siraj should not have gone near him in such a heated manner and shouted. Action must be taken against such behavior and it is good that the ICC has taken notice.

It should be remembered that Siraj had bowled a brilliant spell that day, taking the wickets of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope, and it was at those moments that this controversy also came to light.
