Lahore/Karachi: A strike is being held in several major cities of Sindh, including Karachi, considered Pakistan’s business hub, to protest the new legal amendment regarding taxes.
A shutdown strike is also underway in some cities of Punjab, including Lahore, against the new tax.
Due to the strike called by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday, business in the major cities of Sindh has come to a complete halt.
Trade leaders have declared the strike a success, claiming that all small and large markets in Karachi city have been closed.
The city’s major business centers, including Karachi Sadr, Regal, Electronics Market, Liaquatabad, Haideri, Korangi, Sarafa Bazaar, Medicine Market, and Cloth Market, are closed, and according to local buyers, there is also silence in Karachi’s fruit and vegetable market.
Several markets in Lahore, including Ichhra Market, Samanabad, Abid Market, Shah Alam, Akbar Mandi, Rang Mahal, Anarkali, Mall Road, Hall Road, McLeod Road, and Mitigumri Road, are closed.
Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Javed Balwani had said in a press conference yesterday that ‘the entire Karachi will remain closed.’
He said, ‘Currently, this is only a one-day strike, but if we are not given a written assurance before the next meeting, we will go towards striking once a week, twice a week, or for the entire week.’
