London: Police investigating the rape of a Sikh woman in the West Midlands region of Britain say it is a hate crime.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, law enforcement officials are looking for two white suspects who are accused of racially abusing the woman in broad daylight.
Police say they believe one of the suspects had shaved his head and was wearing gloves.
According to police, the woman who was sexually assaulted is 20 years old.
Police said the incident happened at 8.30 am on Tuesday near Team Road in Oldbury, near Birmingham.
A Sikh community group said it had spoken to the woman and her family and that the words the attackers said were: “You don’t belong in this country, get out of here.”
Sources familiar with the police investigation confirmed the attack was being treated as a hate crime.
West Midlands Police said: “We are keen to speak to anyone in the area who may have seen two men. Both men are described as white. One had a shaved head and was wearing a dark shirt and gloves.”
The other man was reportedly wearing a grey shirt, police said. The woman told us she was subjected to racist comments during the attack.
Sikh Federation UK campaigner Debinderjeet Singh said: “The attack took place in broad daylight on a busy road. All politicians should adopt a zero-tolerance policy for violent racist attacks.’
He said that ‘the current racist environment has been created by politicians playing the anti-immigration card.’
