The business value of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been estimated at $18.5 billion, according to a report by a US investment bank, with current champions Royal Challengers Bangalore named the richest franchise.
The world’s richest cricket league has been the biggest source of revenue for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and in 2020 it was estimated to generate over $11 billion annually for the Indian economy.
According to investment bank Houlihan Lockie, which has estimated the value of several sports franchises around the world, the brand value of the 10-team T20 franchise tournament has increased significantly by 13.8% over the past year, now reaching $3.9 billion.
Bangalore, who won their first IPL title this year with star player Virat Kohli, has achieved a brand value of $269 million, surpassing five-time winners Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai is in second place with $242 million, while Chennai is in third place with $235 million.
The Houlihan Lockey report describes the IPL as a ‘global event’ that has become more than just a cricket league.
