Paris: Like places of worship of any religion, mosques are also highly respected religious places for Muslims. But throwing a pig head in front of such a place of worship is very worrying because eating pork is forbidden in Islam, and Muslims cannot eat pork or any products made from pork.
In such a case, throwing ‘pig heads’ in front of mosques is considered a symbol of hatred for Muslims and Islam, which is not beneficial for interfaith harmony in any way. Pig heads were thrown outside at least nine mosques in the French capital, Paris and its suburbs, with police fearing further atrocities.
According to a report by the AFP news agency, Paris Police Chief Laurent Nunez said that at least nine heads were found outside mosques in different areas of Paris, raising serious concerns about the growing Islamophobia.
Laurent Nunez told a press conference that “pig heads have been thrown in front of some mosques, including four in Paris and five in nearby suburbs.” He said that the possibility of such incidents occurring in more places cannot be ruled out.
According to Laurent Nunez, the police have launched an investigation into allegations of racial or religious hatred and have described these incidents as “reprehensible.”
Pork is forbidden in Islam, and several of the heads had French President Emmanuel Macron’s family name written in blue ink, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.
Laurent Nunez said the incident could also have possible links to past incidents linked to “foreign interference,” but urged “extreme caution.” In early June, three Serbian citizens were charged with vandalizing Jewish sites, which investigators suspect was orchestrated by Russia.
France has the largest Muslim population in the European Union and the largest Jewish population after Israel and the United States. According to the European Union’s Agency for Fundamental Rights, “Islamophobia” and anti-Semitic tendencies have been recorded in several European countries since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
According to the French Interior Ministry, anti-Islamic incidents in the country increased by 75% between January and May 2025, while the rate of attacks on individuals increased threefold.
The incidents outside mosques in Paris were immediately condemned by political and social leaders. According to the presidency, French President Emmanuel Macron met with representatives of the Muslim community in the capital and expressed his “solidarity” with them.
