London: Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announces an increase in traffic charges
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced major changes in the traffic fee (congestion charge) for driving in the city center, which will come into effect from January 2.
Under the change in traffic fees, the discount given to electric vehicles will now end.
Electric vehicles will no longer get a full discount, but only those drivers who have registered their vehicles in the Auto Pay system will also have a limited discount.
However, electric cars will still get a 25 percent discount, while large electric vans and large vehicles will be given a 50 percent discount.
New regulations will come into effect in London from January 2, 2026, under which congestion charges will increase from £15 to £18, while late fees can go up to £21.
Sadiq Khan has said that reducing traffic in London is essential for the economy and the convenience of citizens.
Transport for London argues that without changes, around 2,200 additional vehicles could enter the congestion zone every normal working day, which will cause increased traffic.
It should be noted that congestion charges were introduced to prevent increasing traffic congestion in the city centre and to discourage traffic on busy roads.
