Zagreb: Former Croatian minister Gabriela Zalic has been sentenced to seven months in prison for eating lavish meals at restaurants with government and European Union funds.

According to the European Public Prosecutors’ Office (EPPO), Gabriela Zalic, who was dismissed from her post as Minister of European Union Funds in 2019, spent 10,000 euros (about $11,700) in restaurants with government money at least nine times.

She also paid for her 40th birthday party with government funds. However, after the allegations were proven, she confessed to the crime and returned the full amount.

Gabriela Zalich has a previous conviction for corruption. She was first arrested in 2021. In June this year, she pleaded guilty to another case of corruption and abuse of influence, for which she was sentenced to two years in prison and agreed to pay 200,000 euros in partial compensation.
