London: Britain has become the first country to grant embassy status to the Palestinian Authority mission office in London.
A dignified flag-raising ceremony was held on the building immediately after the Palestinian mission office in London was granted embassy status.
Addressing the ceremony, Palestinian Ambassador Hussam Zamlut described today as a milestone in the history of the national struggle.
The Palestinian ambassador thanked the British government and said that granting embassy status is not only compensation for historical injustices but also a renewal of commitment to a future based on freedom, dignity and basic human rights.
He added that the importance of this bold move by the British government has increased even more as the Palestinian people are currently facing bombings, hunger in Gaza, daily oppression in the West Bank, land grabbing and state terrorism.
He said that the colors of the Palestinian flag tell the story of our history and our sacrifices. Black is the color of sorrow and pain, white is the color of hope, green is the color of the land of Palestine, and red is the color of the sacrifices of our people.
The Palestinian mission in London held a special ceremony on Monday to mark the recognition of the Palestinian state by the United Kingdom, in which the Palestinian flag was also raised.
The ceremony was held to welcome the symbolic and diplomatic development when the United Kingdom, along with Australia, Canada and Portugal, officially recognized Palestine as an independent state on Sunday ahead of the United Nations General Assembly sessions.
It should be noted that the United Kingdom, Australia, Portugal and Canada recognized the Palestinian state on Sunday, which is being described as a major shift in Western foreign policy after decades.
