Lahore: PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has set a record for removing the most captains and bringing in a new captain in the shortest possible time. The Interior Minister has changed captains several times in different formats in just one and a half years (from March 2024 to October 2025) since he took over the reins of cricket. He reinstated Babar during his tenure and then removed him. Rizwan was made captain. Then removed. Shaheen was given leadership and then removed it. Now it has been decided to give him leadership again. While the next turn is being said to be Shan Masood, and preparations are being made to bring Shadab Khan in his place.
Critics believe that the continuous change of captaincy is a sign of poor management. Critics have called the captaincy system a “roller coaster” and described it as extremely harmful for Pakistan cricket. According to the timeline of captaincy changes, on March 29, 2024, Mohsin Naqvi removed Shaheen Afridi from the white-ball captaincy. After this, the chairman appointed Babar Azam as the T20 captain again for the T20 World Cup 2024 on March 31, 2024. On October 1, 2024, Babar Azam resigned from the white-ball captaincy on the chairman’s instructions. On October 27, 2024, Mohammad Rizwan was appointed as the white-ball captain. On March 4, 2025, Salman Ali Agha was made the T20 International captain, and on October 20, after Rizwan was relieved of his duties, Shaheen Shah Afridi was given the leadership responsibility. Thus, he became the 32nd ODI captain of Pakistan cricket.
