New York: In the Democratic Party’s primary race for the mayor of New York City, 33-year-old Muslim politician Zahran Mamdani has surprisingly left former Governor Andrew Cuomo behind.

According to the British news agency Reuters, 67-year-old former Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo said in an address to his supporters that he had called Zahran Mamdani to congratulate him on winning the primary race for mayor.

When Zahran Mamdani, an Indian-American citizen, joined the Democratic Party’s primary election race, he was a foreign face to voters who promised to reject President Trump’s policies.

According to the preliminary results, 44 percent of voters chose Democratic candidate Zahran Mamdani, while 36 percent chose former Governor Andrew Cuomo as their first choice, while 11 percent chose Brad Lander.
The other nine Democratic candidates in the mayoral race were far behind Zahran Mamdani.
After this victory, Zahran Mamdani will be the official candidate of the Democratic Party for the New York mayoral election in November.
In his first speech after winning, Zahran Mamdani said, “Today… with a vision for a city that every New Yorker can afford, we have won.”

He rejected President Trump’s policies and promised to make New York a model city for the Democratic Party.
Although the final results will not be officially announced until next week, other candidates have admitted their defeat according to unofficial results.

Zahran Mamdani, who was born in Uganda, would become the first Indian-American Muslim mayor of New York if he wins and has also been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights.
He was elected to the state assembly from the Queens borough of New York and received the support of two prominent progressive politicians, Senators Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
During the primary campaign, opponent Andrew Cuomo called Zahran Mamdani inexperienced, while the Muslim politician accused him of harassment.
