Palestinian student Mahmoud Khalil files $20 million lawsuit against President Trump

Washington: Mahmoud Khalil, a student leader who led American student protests in favor of Palestine, has filed a $20 million lawsuit against the former President Trump administration for his arrest and detention by immigration authorities.

The Center for Constitutional Rights is providing legal assistance to Mahmoud Khalil.

The lawsuit states that the Trump administration arrested, detained and attempted to deport Mahmoud Khalil as part of an illegal scheme to intimidate him.

The petition further states that Khalil suffered severe mental trauma, financial loss and reputational damage due to the incident, with Mahmood Khalil calling the case the first step towards accountability.

In his statement, he said that those 104 days of my life can never be returned, the trauma I had to endure, the separation from my wife and the moment of the birth of my first child that I could not be a part of, are all irreparable.

He added that there must be accountability for political revenge and misuse of power.

Mahmood Khalil has previously mentioned the painful conditions he went through during his detention, where he said that ‘I was living in a cramped space with more than 70 people, where there was no privacy, and the light never turned off.
