Beijing: A Chinese court has sentenced the former head of the Communist Party of Tibet to death for corruption worth about $50 million.
According to the British news agency Dawn, the Beijing Intermediate Court stated in a WeChat post on Wednesday that Wu Yingjie held the position of Communist Party Secretary in the Tibet Autonomous Region from 2016 to 2021.
According to the court statement, during this time, he illegally received 343 million yuan, or $47.8 million, in bribes.
The court added that these crimes of this official were ‘particularly serious’ and their social impact was also very negative, causing ‘particularly heavy losses’ to the country and the people.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, who came to power more than a decade ago, has launched a wide-ranging campaign against official corruption.
