Bangkok: The court has sentenced former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to one year in prison and ordered him to serve the rest of his sentence in prison.
According to international news agencies, the court declared that Thaksin Shinawatra’s stay in the hospital during his sentence in the corruption case was illegal, so he will have to be transferred to prison. The court also declared his bail and stay in the hospital illegal.
It should be remembered that Shinawatra was sentenced to 8 years in prison in 2008 on charges of corruption and abuse of power, but the sentence was reduced to one year by the king.
He was released on bail six months later after serving part of his sentence in hospital on medical grounds in 2024. The court’s latest ruling said that the former prime minister had not served his full sentence, so he will have to serve the remaining term in prison.
