Peshawar: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan has decided to remove Ali Amin Gandapur and nominate Muhammad Sohail Afridi as the new Chief Minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Muhammad Sohail Afridi was elected as an independent member of the provincial assembly from Constituency 70 of Khyber district in the 2024 general elections by defeating Pakistan Muslim League candidate Bilawal Afridi.
Before being nominated as the Chief Minister, he was nominated as the Minister for Communication and Works and was also appointed as the Special Assistant on Higher Education 10 days ago. He is also a member of the PTI Central Executive Committee.
Sohail Afridi belongs to a middle-class family from the backward Bara tehsil of Khyber district.
It is said that several investigations are underway against Sohail Afridi. He is being investigated by the FIA Cyber Crime Wing, Peshawar and the National Cyber Crime and Intelligence Agency for making inflammatory statements against the government and state institutions, but no formal charges have been filed against him so far.
The 36-year-old Chief Minister-designate Sohail Afridi will also have the honor of being the youngest Chief Minister of the province. Apart from this, he will also be the first Chief Minister to be formed from the tribal districts.
In the history of the province, Awami National Party’s Ameer Khan Haider Hoti assumed the Chief Ministership of the province at the age of 37.
After obtaining a master’s degree in economics from the University of Peshawar, he became associated with the Insaf Student Federation during his student days and was later elected as the provincial president of the federation.
After the Insaf Students Federation, he was elected as the provincial president of the Insaf Youth Wing and was playing an active role in the party’s politics.
