Washington: US Congressman Brandon Gill faced a strong public backlash when he advised British-American journalist Mehdi Hassan to ‘go back to Britain’.
The controversy began when Mehdi Hassan, while supporting the call to prayer in the US, said that if church bells can ring, then the call to prayer can also be given.
Mehdi Hassan is the editor-in-chief and CEO of Zeteo. He addressed American Christians and said, ‘If you can ring your church bell, we can also give the call to prayer.’ We are just as American as you are, and we don’t tolerate anyone’s nonsense.’

Responding to this, Brandon Gill wrote sarcastically on the social media platform X, ‘We can come here in large numbers and fundamentally change the landscape of American public life.’

Mehdi Hassan responded by pointing to Brandon Gill’s family background, writing, ‘Your wife is an Indian-American, the daughter of an Indian immigrant.’

To this, Brandon Gill replied, ‘My wife is a Christian and she also doesn’t want to listen to your oppressive Muslim call to prayer. If you want to live in a Muslim country, go back to the UK.’
