Islamabad: The proposed draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment is currently being approved clause-by-clause in the Senate, the upper house of the Parliament of Pakistan, with the government receiving a total of 64 votes in favor, while no votes are being received in opposition.

In a meeting chaired by Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, Federal Law Minister Senator Azam Nazir Tarar presented the draft of the proposed constitutional amendment this evening, during which the opposition protested strongly, tore up copies of the bill, and later walked out of the house.

However, when the Senate Chairman started the process of voting in favor and against the bill, the government alliance initially received 62 votes. Meanwhile, Senator Saifullah Abro (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) and Senator Ahmed Ali (Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam) also suddenly joined the government, after which the government achieved the required numbers.
