Lahore: It has been revealed that Indian Sikh pilgrim Sarabjit Kaur, who was considered missing during the Baba Guru Nanak’s birthday celebrations in Pakistan, has converted to Islam and married a Pakistani citizen.
According to the available marriage certificate, 48-year-old Sarabjit Kaur changed her Islamic name to Noor on November 5 and married 42-year-old Nasir Hussain, a resident of Farooqabad town in Sheikhupura district, in which a dowry of Rs 10,000 has been paid.
This matter came to light when a group of 1,923 Indian pilgrims returned to India via Wagah after completing a 10-day pilgrimage, but the number turned out to be one less.
When security agencies confirmed, it was found that Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Muktsar Sahib district of Indian Punjab, was not among those who returned. In this context, a search was launched after she was allegedly considered missing.
According to a senior officer of the Abandoned Waqf Properties Board, Sarabjit Kaur had been trying to obtain a visa to Pakistan for the past two years, and this time she got a visa by joining a group of Sikh pilgrims. According to him, Sikh representative organizations in India are committed to not including any single woman in a pilgrimage group; however, formal approval was given in this case.
After entering Pakistan through the Wagah border on November 4, special identity cards were issued to the Sikh pilgrims, while during the pilgrimage, they also went out freely for shopping and tourism in various cities, including Nankana Sahib, Hassan Abdal, and Lahore.
According to initial estimates, Sarabjit Kaur separated herself from the group during these activities, but later it was revealed that she had converted of her own accord and got married.
In the marriage certificate, she has declared herself divorced and the mother of two children. However, it is not yet known by whom the Indian woman converted to Islam, and how long she had been in contact with Nasir Hussain.
