London/Islamabad: Amnesty International (South Asia Region) has linked Iman Mazari’s arrest to a “campaign against the judiciary”.
Amnesty International has said that today’s arrest of human rights lawyers Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatta is the latest in a continuing campaign of judicial harassment and intimidation by Pakistani authorities.
Amnesty International said it is concerned by the manner of the arrests, the failure to adhere to due process, and the authorities’ continued pursuit of bogus and vindictive cases aimed solely at silencing Iman and Hadi for their human rights work and dissent. This widespread pattern of harassment and intimidation must end.
Amnesty International has called on the Pakistani authorities to immediately release Iman Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chatha and drop all charges against them for working to defend their human rights.
Amnesty International said the baseless trial of Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatha is a blatant abuse of the justice system. The Pakistani authorities must end the judicial harassment and coercive tactics used to silence dissent and intimidate human rights defenders.
Amnesty International said the charges against Iman Mazari and Hadi Chatha were brought solely for the peaceful exercise of their human rights and the performance of their professional duties. The authorities should immediately drop all charges against them and revoke their arrest warrants.
