Kuwait: Most of those killed by drinking toxic alcohol are South Asian immigrants

The series of deaths due to drinking adulterated alcohol in the Gulf state of Kuwait has taken a terrifying turn.

According to Arab media, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health has confirmed that 13 people have now died after drinking toxic alcohol.

The Ministry of Health said that the condition of more than 63 people is critical after drinking toxic alcohol, of which 31 had to be transferred to a ventilator. 21 have lost their sight.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health said in a statement that the presence of methanol was found in the alcohol, which is a very dangerous chemical.

The statement added that the first attack of this chemical is on the vision and the affected person loses or weakens his vision.

The majority of those affected by tainted alcohol are South Asian immigrants who work in the construction, domestic and commercial services sectors in Kuwait.

Kuwait has had a complete ban on the import of alcohol since 1964, and alcohol consumption was also criminalized in the 1980s.

Despite these restrictions, the clandestine sale of illegally produced alcohol is a long-standing problem, often affecting poor immigrants.

According to public health experts, methanol is a deadly poison for the human body. It directly attacks the liver, brain and optic nerves.
