Washington: The US has refused to accept a shipment of Indian mangoes.
According to a report by the Economic Times, 15 shipments of mangoes from India reached the US, but Indian authorities faced difficulties due to incomplete documentation.
The shipment was sent by air, which the US refused to accept. According to the report, the affected shipments were subjected to radiation treatment in Mumbai on May 8 and 9 but were rejected at US airports in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Atlanta.
Irradiation is a mandatory process that exposes the fruit to controlled doses of radiation to kill pests and extend shelf life.
For this reason, the exporters were asked to either destroy the cargo or re-export it to India, upon which they decided to discard the mangoes.
Furthermore, the exporters have estimated a potential loss of about $500,000.
