London: Britain is currently facing its highest number of asylum applications in its history, while political turmoil is also intensifying over the issue of temporarily housing thousands of migrants in hotels.
Immigration is a sensitive issue, especially at a time when Labour Party Prime Minister Keir Starmer is trying to curb the growing public support for the hard-right Reform UK party and its leader, Nigel Farage.
The Reform UK campaign is trying to stoke public anger against the record number of migrants arriving in England illegally in small boats from France.
According to figures released by the British Home Office, 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest in any 12 months since the figures began to be compiled in 2001.
32,059 migrants were staying in hotels at the end of June, an 8% increase on the same month last year, but far below the peak of 56,042 at the end of September 2023.
The Labour Party says the number of hotels has fallen from 400 two years ago to around 230 now.
Spending cuts:
The amount spent on refugees has fallen from £5.38 billion in 2023-24 to £4.76 billion in 2024-25, a 12% drop.
More than 50,000 people have arrived in the UK from France by small boats since Keir Starmer became prime minister, with nearly 28,000 arriving this year alone, a record number since data began in 2018. The Home Office said there was a 27% increase in illegal arrivals, with 88% of those arriving by boat.
