Britain, France and Germany accuse Iran of violating the 2015 deal, Israel welcomes, and Russia calls the sanctions ‘a big mistake’

Geneva: The United Nations has reimposed an arms embargo and other restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program, following a move by European powers, with Tehran warning that the move will be met with a strong response.
Britain, France and Germany have accused Iran of violating the 2015 deal aimed at preventing it from developing a nuclear bomb, and have since decided to reinstate sanctions in the UN Security Council, although Iran denies any intention to build nuclear weapons.
The deal, which was signed by Iran, Britain, Germany, France, the United States, Russia and China, has been in place for a decade, and its collapse could further escalate tensions in the Middle East, especially after months of Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
UN sanctions imposed under Security Council resolutions passed between 2006 and 2010 came back into force at 12 midnight (GMT) on Sunday, after attempts to delay them at the annual meeting of world leaders in New York failed.
The foreign ministers of France, Britain and Germany said in a joint statement after the sanctions were imposed that they “urge Iran and all countries to fully comply with these resolutions.”
The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, also confirmed that the EU would now immediately reimpose all previously lifted UN and EU nuclear sanctions.
