London: The British government has announced that foreign nationals who commit sex offenses will be denied asylum in the UK under the new Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill.

The UK Home Office said that foreigners convicted of any sex offense will be disqualified from receiving refugee status.

Under the UN Refugee Convention, countries have the right to refuse asylum to terrorists, war criminals and those convicted of “particularly serious crimes”, which in the UK are defined as serious crimes that can be punished within 12 months or more.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Sex offenders who pose a threat to the community should not be allowed to benefit from refugee protection in the UK, and we are strengthening the law to ensure these horrific crimes are taken seriously.”
