London: The British government has announced significant and drastic changes to the immigration system, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign labor and tightening control over the visa system.

According to the new white paper, a minimum of 10 years of legal presence will now be required to obtain permanent residence (Settlement) and citizenship in the UK, which was previously 5 years.

The Home Office says that these reforms aim to ensure that foreign nationals play a positive and meaningful role in British society.

The eligibility criteria for work visas have been raised again to RQF level 6 (i.e. graduate level).

The immigration salary list, which allowed low-paid recruitment, has been abolished.

The social care visa route will be closed, but existing applicants will be able to extend their visas until 2028.

The English language requirement will now apply to more visa categories, even dependents.

The study visa policy has been tightened, with the post-study work period now reduced from 2 years to 18 months.

It has also been announced that the deportation of foreign criminals will be accelerated, whether or not they have been sentenced to prison.

According to the Home Office, these measures are being taken to create a fair, manageable and economic growth-supporting immigration system, so as to reduce the burden on public services.
