London: Net migration to the UK halved to 431,000 in 2024, according to official figures, in welcome news for the much-criticised Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

According to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), net migration was 431,000 at the end of 2024, significantly lower than the 860,000 recorded at the end of December 2023.

This is the largest drop in net migration since the coronavirus pandemic.

The ONS said in its latest report that long-term net migration has fallen by almost 50%.

According to the report, there has been a clear decline in the number of people coming to the UK on work and study visas.
Moreover, an increase in the number of people returning on these visas was also recorded by the end of 2024.
The previous Conservative government had tightened the conditions for these visas, including increasing the salary limit and banning family members from accompanying them.
