London: A British court has granted the early release of right-wing anti-Islam extremist leader Tommy Robinson from prison, having been convicted of contempt of court.
The real name of 42-year-old anti-Islam campaigner Tommy Robinson is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and he announced his release in a video.
The video posted on social media was titled ‘Tommy released from prison’, in which he thanked ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk on one hand and criticized the British government on the other.
The video was filmed outside Woodhall Prison in southeast England, where Tommy Robinson was sentenced to 18 months in prison last October for breaching a court order banning him from repeating false allegations about a Syrian refugee.
He was due to be released on July 26 but the High Court in London heard his appeal last week, in which he vowed not to repeat his allegations, although the judge also noted that Tommy Robinson had shown no remorse or regret.
A day after his release, Robinson was charged with harassing two men, said to be journalists from the Daily Mail, and has been ordered to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on June 5 on a charge of “intimidating harassment”.
Former football hooligan Tommy Robinson founded the far-right English Defence League in 2009. He has been convicted of several offenses including public order offenses and contempt of court. He has around 1.2 million followers on social media, where he makes strong statements against immigrants and Muslims.
He was also accused of instigating the worst riots in Britain in 2024, which he denies. He was kept separate from other prisoners in prison because there were intelligence reports that a prisoner could kill him.
During an appeal in April, his lawyers argued that being in prison and being isolated had affected his health and that this had worsened his attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
