Lahore: The government could not bear the pressure of the people, social media made such a fuss about Maryam Nawaz that she remembered her grandmother and they withdrew the announcement to name ‘The Jinnah Institute of Cardiology’ after Maryam Nawaz. The tradition of naming government institutions, projects and places after politicians is quite old in Pakistan’s political history.
Recently, the Punjab government has changed the name of Lahore’s Jinnah Institute of Cardiology to ‘Maryam Nawaz Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases’, for which the government is facing criticism from political circles and on social media. After this, Punjab’s Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has denied this on the social media platform (X) and has said that the government is not changing this name.
However, this issue, which has been in the media for 24 hours, has once again sparked a debate about when the tradition of naming government institutions after politicians began in Pakistan, what its objectives are, and what impact it has on the political landscape.
