London: Agnes Callamard, head of the global human rights organization Amnesty International, has said that Britain is misusing counter-terrorism laws after banning the ‘Palestine Action’ group.
Speaking at Amnesty UK’s national conference Amplify, she said that ‘the British government is using terrorism laws more to limit protests than to address the root cause of these actions, which is the genocide broadcast live from Gaza.’
According to a report by Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera, Amnesty International head Agnes Callamard said that the British government has misused local counter-terrorism laws after banning ‘Palestine Action’.
On July 3, British lawmakers voted to ban the pro-Palestinian activist group Palestine Action, the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) reported.
The draft bill to amend the Counter-Terrorism Act 2000 and outlaw three organisations, including Palestine Action, which was formally introduced by Home Secretary Evyt Cooper earlier this week, was passed by the House of Commons on Wednesday by a vote of 385 to 26.
Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters in London were arrested on suspicion of “terrorism” after showing support for the banned group Palestine Action, including an 83-year-old priest, according to Al Jazeera.
