London: The worst scandal in the history of the British Post Office, in which more than 900 innocent employees were convicted, has finally been exposed with full force through an official inquiry.
The scandal has been named the ‘Horizon Scandal’, which is related to serious flaws in the Post Office’s computer system that showed fictitious financial losses of millions of pounds.
The flaw was in the Horizon software made by the Japanese company Fujitsu, which had been used across the UK since 1999.
When several postmasters complained about financial imbalances, instead of listening to them, they were declared guilty and subjected to imprisonment, dismissal and humiliation. 236 people were sentenced to prison while several people committed suicide.
A government inquiry launched in 2021 found that both the Post Office and Fujitsu knew about the wrongdoing but covered up the truth and prosecuted innocent people.
The British government has so far announced more than £1 billion in compensation. Several victims have had their convictions overturned, while other cases are being reopened.
Former CEO Paula Venables, who is considered the central figure in the scandal, has come under intense public pressure and criticism.
The popular TV series “Mr. Bates vs The Post Office” brought the case to international attention and increased pressure on the British government to deliver more swift justice.
