London: A British parliamentary committee has alleged that Iran has made at least 15 attempts to assassinate or kidnap people living in the UK since 2022, while the threats posed by Tehran have increased significantly.
According to ‘AFP’, the parliament’s intelligence and security committee reported that London’s response has been focused only on ‘resolving the crisis’, while concerns about Iran’s nuclear program have received much more attention.
Tehran immediately strongly rejected the allegations, calling them baseless, political and hostile.
The Iranian embassy in London said the committee’s claims were baseless, irresponsible and reflected a wider trend of defaming Iran’s legitimate regional and national interests.
Iran became the first country in March to be placed on a stricter category of the UK’s new Foreign Influence Registration Scheme, which aims to strengthen national security against covert foreign influence.
Under the scheme, all individuals working in the country for Iran, its intelligence services or the Revolutionary Guards must register on a new list or face imprisonment.
The watchdog committee’s chairman, Kevan Jones, said in the report that Iran poses a widespread, persistent and unpredictable threat to the UK, its citizens and interests.
He said Iran has a high capacity to take risks during offensive operations, and its intelligence agencies are largely well-resourced and powerful.
