London: A new study has found that okra may be a vegetable that can help prevent long-term health problems associated with overeating at a young age.
According to NDTV, the study has revealed that a diet rich in okra helped reduce obesity, diabetes, and brain inflammation in mice that were given an excessive diet in childhood.
This study was published in the medical journal ‘Brain Research’ under the title ‘Okra-rich diet prevents brain inflammation in obesity caused by excessive diet’.
This study was conducted on mice that were taken into the custody of scientists from a young age. During their upbringing, they were given a good diet, allowing them to become fatter than normal mice and enabling their bodies to develop more effectively.
When these mice grew up, they were overweight due to obesity and faced diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health problems that are usually found in obese people.
During the study, mice that were given a diet that included 1.5 percent okra had significantly fewer of these problems. Their body fat decreased, sugar was controlled, muscles strengthened and brain swelling decreased.
Most importantly, okra restored insulin sensitivity in the part of the brain that controls hunger and energy use. As a result, such mice ate less food and their metabolism improved.
The study also showed that natural components in okra, such as catechins and quercetin, have the ability to reduce inflammation and improve insulin action.
Interestingly, okra had no significant effect on mice that were not given much food in childhood. This means that these benefits are especially for people who are already at risk for metabolic disorders. Although this research was conducted on mice, experts believe that including okra in early childhood dietary strategies can help control obesity and related problems, although more research is needed on humans.
