London: The British government has announced that foreign students who stay after the expiry of their visas will be deported.
The Home Office has warned thousands of international students in this regard through emails and text messages. Officials say that this step is being taken because there has been an alarming increase in asylum applications after the expiry of their visas.
Reports have said that in the past year, the UK has received about 14,800 asylum applications, most of which were students who came to the UK on study visas. Pakistani students made the most applications, with 5,700, followed by students from India, Bangladesh and Nigeria.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said some students had applied for asylum in countries where there was no emergency or danger. The government has described this as an abuse of the system.
