London: A minor mistake by the British Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader forced his resignation. Angela Rayner resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary after failing to pay enough tax on a flat in Hove, East Sussex

She also resigned as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, and now the government reshuffle is underway.

Rayner, the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, referred herself to the Prime Minister’s ethics adviser earlier this week after admitting to underpaying stamp duty on her £800,000 flat.

In her resignation letter, she says she takes “full responsibility” for the “mistake” of not seeking more tax advice on the purchase.

The ethics report found Rayner breached the ministerial code and “failed to exercise due care” in taking legal advice.

Keir Starmer told Rayner in a letter that he was “deeply sad” that his time in government had come to an end but that she would remain a “major figure” in the party.

It is devastating for Rayner and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Angela Rayner has resigned after admitting she did not pay enough stamp duty on the purchase of her £800,000 seaside flat.

The deputy prime minister, who handed himself over to Sir Keir Starmer’s ethics adviser on Wednesday, insisted he made a mistake based on the advice he received at the time.

And, following the report’s outcome, Ms Rayner has also stepped down from her roles as housing secretary and deputy prime minister, as well as deputy leader of the Labour Party.

Her resignation leaves Sir Keir in a difficult position and is a major headache for the prime minister.
