Islamabad: The lavish wedding of a senior government official’s daughter during the economic crisis has exposed the shocking gap between the lifestyle of the rich and the country’s tax system.
According to official sources, the FBR has received a high-profile wedding case, which consisted of 6 lavish ceremonies and on which about Rs248 million (248 million) was spent.
The wedding expenses included lavish venues, designer dresses, diamond jewellery, fireworks, foreign consultants, drone light shows and cinema-style video shoots, but there was no justification for this expenditure in the tax returns of the concerned government official or the bride.
Details of expenses:
- Decorations and venues: around Rs 4 crore
- Food and event arrangements (400 guests): Rs 3 crore
- Dresses for the bride, groom and close relatives: Rs 3 crore
- Diamond and gold jewellery: Rs 8 crore
- Makeup, styling, entertainment and photography: Rs 3 crore
- Invitations, gifts and creative consultancy: around Rs 28 million
According to Daily Dawn/Dawn TV sources, these services were mostly obtained in cash and secretly, making tax audits impossible. The bride has made several trips to Canada, the UK, Mexico and the UAE, which shows that her life is much more luxurious than the figures stated in her tax returns.
According to the FBR, this case is a perfect example of tax evasion and administrative loopholes. Luxurious spending by the rich on weddings, foreign trips, property and jewelry often remains outside the tax net, which the state is unable to track.
