Islamabad: It is being claimed that the firewall project installed in Pakistan to monitor social media has failed. Editor-in-Chief of Nawaiwaqt, Daily Dawn, London, Director News of British Dawn TV Dr. Akhtar Gulfam, has claimed that the government of Pakistan has decided to permanently close it before the expected auction of 5G spectrum, while the national exchequer had to bear a loss of billions of rupees from this project.

According to a Dawn TV report, the firewall project installed in 2024 for the purpose of monitoring and controlling social media was launched without complete technical preparation, due to which it could not be compatible with the country’s telecom infrastructure. Official sources say that the project failed to deliver the desired results, and due to this, the internet speed was also severely affected.

According to the report, the internet remained sluggish due to the firewall, which affected the digital services of millions of freelancers and thousands of companies. Officials say that, keeping in mind the situation and to stabilize the system before the auction of 5G spectrum, it was decided to permanently close the firewall.

On the other hand, when Dawn contacted the IT Ministry regarding the closure of the firewall, they refrained from giving an official stance.
