London: Dame Sarah Mulally became the first woman Archbishop of Canterbury in the history of the Church of England.
Dame Sarah Mulally is the 106th religious leader to become Archbishop of Canterbury.
Dame Sarah Mulally is 63 years old. She has also been the Bishop of London for 7 years. She is also a former midwife and calls herself a supporter of women’s rights.
The Church of England announced her speech on Friday, Sarah Mulally became the first woman to hold the 1,400-year-old position. Her appointment has been objected to by conservative Anglican groups based in African countries who are against female bishops.
Sarah Mullally said in an interview that the Church of England and the Anglican Communion have always had to deal with difficult issues when it comes to same-sex relationships. She acknowledged that it is a complex and sensitive issue that is unsettling to discuss and may not be resolved quickly.
In her speech at Canterbury Cathedral, she described the current era as “hopeful but confusing” and said that countries like Britain are grappling with complex moral and political issues such as immigration and marginalized communities. She is the first woman to be appointed as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, a step that was paved by reforms introduced a decade ago.
Mullally, 63, a former nurse who has been Bishop of London since 2018, will also become a symbolic global leader for 85 million Anglicans.
In his first address at Canterbury Cathedral, he strongly condemned the sex abuse scandals in the church, the shortcomings of safeguards and the terrorist attack on the Manchester synagogue.
