Islamabad: The opposition alliance in the National Assembly has nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the leader of the opposition. The application submitted by the opposition parties has been deposited in the office of the Secretary National Assembly, which has the signatures of 74 members of the assembly.
According to sources, the application was submitted by Chief Whip Aamir Dogar, former Speaker Asad Qaiser and other leaders. Three PTI members could not sign as they were abroad.
After applying, Mahmood Khan Achakzai will now officially lead the opposition in the National Assembly. It is expected that he will play a central role in formulating a joint strategy of the opposition parties against the government.
According to political observers, the appointment of Mahmood Khan Achakzai could set a new direction for the opposition alliance, while political activities in the parliament are likely to accelerate.
The majority of opposition members have submitted a request to the National Assembly Secretariat to make Mahmood Achakzai the opposition leader.
This request was submitted to the National Assembly Secretariat by PTI Chief Whip and National Assembly Member Aamir Dogar and Asad Qaiser on Tuesday.
Aamir Dogar says that ‘the request has the signatures of 74 National Assembly members and they have demanded that Mahmood Achakzai be appointed as the opposition leader immediately.’
He added that ‘the important constitutional seat has been vacant for a long time and the majority of opposition members are with Mahmood Achakzai, so a notification of his appointment as the opposition leader should be issued.’
It should be remembered that the post of opposition leader in the National Assembly fell vacant after the disqualification of PTI leader Omar Ayub Khan in the May 9 cases.
Former Prime Minister and PTI founding chairman Imran Khan has nominated Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Achakzai for the post.
