London: Pakistan has reached the second position in the Global Terrorism Index 2025, while the number of deaths in terrorist attacks increased by 45% to 1081 last year.

The Global Terrorism Index 2025, published by the London-based Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), a report by the London-based daily Nawa-e-Waqt, Dawn TV and Dawn newspaper, provides a comprehensive summary of the key trends and patterns of terrorism over the past 17 years.

The report ranks 163 countries (99.7 percent of the world’s population) by the impact of terrorism, with indicators including the number of terrorist incidents, deaths, injuries and hostages.

This is the fifth consecutive year that terrorism-related deaths have increased and Pakistan has recorded the largest year-on-year increase in the past decade. This trend is reflected in the increase in the number of terrorist attacks, which increased from 517 in 2023 to 1,099 in 2024, the first year that the number of attacks has exceeded 1,000 since the index began.

According to the 12th annual Global Terrorism Index (GTI), the number of countries that have recorded terrorist attacks has increased from 58 to 66.
